Temporary Anchorage Devices

Temporary Anchorage Devices (TADs) from Greater Vancouver Orthodontics can be used alone or in combination with braces to help make tooth movement go more quickly and comfortably.

What is a Temporary Anchorage Device?

A temporary anchorage device, or TAD, is a small titanium anchor that is used in certain orthodontic cases to help achieve faster, more efficient tooth movement.

TADs can be used in combination with braces or as a headgear alternative.

How are TADs placed?

First, the orthodontist will use a strong anesthetic to numb the gum tissue and the jaw surrounding the spot where the TAD will be placed.

Once the area has been numbed, the orthodontist will gently place the TAD through the gum tissue and anchor it securely into the jawbone.

Placing a TAD is a relatively quick procedure.

You may feel slight pressure while your doctor is placing the TAD, but within a day after it has been placed, you will no longer be able to feel it at all.

Once your treatment is complete, or when it is no longer needed to help straighten your teeth, the TAD will be removed.

Removing a TAD is a procedure that only takes a few minutes.

What can I do to help relieve soreness caused by my TAD?

If you do feel any discomfort related to your TAD, we recommend Tylenol® to help relieve your pain. If you are still experiencing pain or discomfort multiple days after your treatment, please contact one of our clinics as soon as possible.

How can I keep my TAD clean?

A TAD is cleaned the same way braces are: by brushing and flossing your teeth regularly and thoroughly. When your TAD is placed, we will also provide you with an antimicrobial mouthwash that you will need to use twice a day.
